![]() I’m just a hobby tinker but I’m finding major flaws in all the work to fix my basement flood and remodel and having to tell the experts how to do their job. I try to hire only people with really good reviews (and lots of them). It can be boring and hurt hands and shoulders like hell but the more time you spend on it now the better it will look and last later.Įvery contractor/company I hire seems to be terrible and inept at their jobs. Anything that’s not right can be fixed so just take your time and be thorough. You can always go back to them after and do touch up. When you do your final skim you do not have to go all the way into the corners and best if you don’t. Alternate which side of the angle when you transition from wall angle to ceiling angle so you don’t have to worry about waiting on the next coat. Also, when doing the corners… only do one side at a time and let them dry before the other side. This will help to minimize the heavy lines from the stroke. Let one edge of your blade float while the other side is pushed harder. When you skim or even bed coat for that matter, choose a side to to “push” the mud towards sort of like a wave if that makes sense. Don’t be afraid to leave something to dry before going over it again. Sometimes less is more and sometimes that one more stroke will be what messes it up. The more feathered out your edges on any stroke the easier it will be to sand. Good man, you probably already know this but just in case…. Personal preference is to skin coat the entire wall surface (this will allow the paint to dry uniformly and give you the best possible outcome. Use a 500watt halogen at an angle to the wall(this will show you what needs to be addressed) if you can’t see it with the spot light you won’t see it in natural light. You can use quickset mud(fast drying) (probably start out with a 20 or 45 and only mix a pan at a time) do this to fix any major areas or places you need to get right quickly. Then skim(wipe on, wipe off) until you get it to a point of flat and smooth. Sand the whole thing down to where there’s only the scratches rather than the highs. I prefer the porter cable but there’s plenty cheaper out there. I do suggest that you invest a few hundred into a good electric pole sander/vacuum combo. On top of all of this, if the job is priced under 30k there’s no regulatory rules about the contractor’s qualification and it becomes buyer beware in the eyes of the inspectors( even more so that drywall requires no inspection) The job itself is totally doable even from an amateur stand point. It’s not on you(picking) there was an influx of DIY contractors that flooded the market when 07-08 crash took place and it seems that ever since it’s been costing more for less qualified and quality. Just baffling and frustrating to no end and now my insurance is still hounding me to get this done ASAP. Plus who’s to say it they would do a good job either… Not so much now but I’m going to be doing all the work again it looks like as I don’t have the money anymore to hire anyone else. I have a herniated disk now and reoccurring fractures in my feet that swell up from doing all the work myself. This new flood took out the same bathroom again and also 10ft in all directions from it. The first time we had the flood I remodeled the entire bathroom myself down to the studs and everything in it. ![]() Dude literally said he was having a kid soon and needed the money then claimed to have a miscarriage, and then claimed his bank account got hacked and claimed I might I had something to do with it. I’m guessing he took my money to buy drugs. He Seemed to be doing alright the first couple days but then It started getting really shitty and it was a chore just getting him to show up again. This drywal guy yeah he seemed a bit off but honestly I was going to do the finish coat so I just needed some drywall hung taped and basic level of mud I could sand down smooth and out a finishing coat over then paint. 3 different plumbing companies, 2 electricians, 3 restoration companies, mitigation companies, asbestos teams, moving companies, and don’t even get me started on Nationwide being absolute dogshit and bouncing me between 3 different adjusters both times and delaying work starting for at least 3-4 months. I look up places with good reviews and am usually not trying to get the cheapest guy either. ![]() I’ve had two small floods over the last 2 years and I’ve absolutely hated working with every contractor I’ve had as they are always super incompetent.
